I started Nicolita eleven years ago while attending USC Marshall School of Business. Spring Break was the highlight of the year and what we looked forward to after finals. My favorite thing to do was go bikini shopping for my new style each year. Although I was in shape, I always had a problem finding the right bikini because I was in between bottom sizes.
Hey! I’m Cuban, and my Hips don’t Lie!
Since the suits were usually sold as a set, a lot of times I would find a top that fit but a bottom that didn’t. The bottoms would pinch my hips or be way too baggy in the backside. Those two major issues sparked my desire to start Nicolita and design bikinis with our now signature NO PINCH FIT and Heart-Shaped backside.
After pregnancy: the tables have turned
After giving birth to my adorable baby girl a few months ago, I’ve noticed some huge changes in my body. Like the fact that I had gained close to fifty pounds during my pregnancy and my college body was long gone at this point! Talk about an outer-body experience. When I would look in the mirror, I could hardly recognize myself. Although I wasn’t feeling like my old self during pregnancy, I did embrace my bump and still rocked my Nicolita swimwear…in the privacy of my balcony that is.
After baby, embracing my “new bump” was a different story. Although, I have lost more than 35 pounds since her birth, these last 15 pounds have been the hardest to deal with. EVERYTHING in my closet still fits differently. Especially my selection of Nicolita bikinis which now was due for a major overhaul.
Reality Check: Packing for our family first trip
My husband’s company trip to Palm Springs was coming up and I had to face reality and pick some bikini options to beat the desert heat. The last thing on your mind 3 months after giving birth is putting on a bikini. Even though I own a swimwear company, I’m human too. I needed to find a couple bikini options that would do the following:
1. Cover my Stomach
2. Hold up “The Girls”
3. Not pinch my curves
4. Most importantly, make me look and feel sexy but still be conservative enough for the ‘Company Pool party’.
As daunting of a task this seemed in my mind, I didn’t let that realization deter me from enjoying our first family trip and my daughter’s first experience in a pool. That said, I picked out a few great and appropriate pieces from the Nicolita collection. I hope these options will help you out if you are in the same situation as me.
First Pick: One Piece V-Neck With Rumba Ruffles
My first pick was the lovely and sophisticated Rumba Ruffles V-Neck One Piece.
This one-piece is extremely flattering because it has cascading ruffles in the front that discreetly cover up your stomach. The deep v-neck draws all the attention to the chest, which was what I wanted to focus on. It also has a built-in shelf bra which is similar to a sports bra-like structure that provides ample support. We all know how breasts tend to change during and after pregnancy and this provided me with the lift and support that I needed. It also features lovely shirring down your backside to give some sexy balance to your typical one piece coverage. I choose this style in the Lipstick Red and Night (Black) colors. Both of these colors are very flattering especially if you want to camouflage certain areas on your body. Darker colors work best!
Second Pick – Retro Apron Back Tankini & Noche Cha Cha Boy Short
I gave birth via C-section (more on that some other time), so I have a scar below my bikini line. A lot of Nicolita style bottoms are low rise which I know would still cover my scar, but I just wanted to select a style a little higher on my hips to make sure it would cover my stomach a bit more.
We offer a couple different Nicolita boy short styles which were the exact coverage I was looking for. The Senorita Solids and Isla Bonita boy short bottoms are great, but I ended selecting the Noche Cha Cha Boy Short. I love the crochet sides and how comfortable this bottom feels. It has sandwich elastic all around the hips and legs so there is no digging in on your body. I loved how it covered up a little bit more of my stomach while still being a sexy on my backside.
I paired this bottoms with our new Retro Apron Back Tankini. I love this top! It is not a typical fitted tankini. The halter top ties at your neck and has ample cup coverage. The apron part ties at your mid back but still shows off a little skin. It covered up my stomach and length of the top went just below the top of my bottom. I always felt very comfortable and not too exposed while wearing this. The Night (Black) color is really slimming and the fabric is a bit flowy, so it was not hugging all parts of my body and holding on to my curves.
What I also love about this top is that it looks great when paired with any coverup bottom. I wore a long skirt with a side slight as a cover up. While the Tankini Top is a piece of swimwear, it also looks like a resort-wear top. Whenever I needed to go inside the hotel lobby to get lunch at the restaurant, I just put on the skirt and wore the tankini. It was a perfect top for lounging around without feeling too awkward about not covering up enough.
Love yourself no matter what, but pick a swimsuit that fits
I always tell my clients to feel comfortable in their skin and love their body no matter what size they are. Truth be told, it was now my turn to listen to my own advice. It’s actually a hard thing to do when you’re still struggling to lose 15 extra pounds and have new stretch marks on your not so flat stomach. However, finding a swimsuit style that fits and flatters your shape makes all the difference to truly embrace and love your shape. Knowing your shape and what areas you want to coverup/ show off before going swimwear shopping helps so much when selecting a style.
So, in the end, the tables did turn on me to challenge myself outside of my comfort zone and get inspired to design new styles to target some new swimwear concerns.
