The caliente swimwear styles of Nicolita heated up the air when they came sashaying down the runway at Style Fashion Week L.A. at the Vibiana events center on Oct. 17.
Los Angeles designer Nicole Di Rocco tugged on her Cuban roots to give the saucy bikinis and one-pieces a sexy look without exposing too much skin. Sculpting suits with the Latina woman in mind, she employed shirred no-pinch bottoms to flatter a woman’s curves. She also added ruffles to tops and bottoms to add flair and fabric that bounced at every step.
The Spring 2012 line is called “Sabor Tropical”, or “Tropical Flavor.” That flavor was served up in solid tropical shades such as mango orange, yellow, kelly green, teal and orchid violet.
Many of the styles harkened to the 1940s and 1950s, the era when Di Rocco’s parents lived in Cuba. She crafted pinup halter tops and high-waisted bathing suit bottoms that sometimes reached above the navel or took to a nautical theme.
In the Nicolita collection, there was a bathing suit for just about every woman, from the more conservative one-pieces with a cascade of rumba ruffles down the front to the more skimpy “La Turista” bikinis with an abbreviated bottom and halter top.—Deborah Belgum
